I am an adoptee, born in 1968 and adopted in a closed adoption. I often write on this platform about my experience with "being born unwanted." As I read this, I read my journey and that of many adoptees. Who do we look like, why were we relinquished, depression and anxiety, longing to know then struggling to connect. We exist in the in-between. Nothing about adoption is a fairy tale, and adoptees must never be used as pawns in the battle over reproductive health. Ours is a complex pain, one that ebbs and flows over a lifetime. While the details of Shelly's history are remarkable, when the infamy is stripped away, it is just another story illuminating the true complexity of life as an adoptee.
