I toured a Waldorf for my children. In the kindergarten classroom there was an image of Mary Magdalene and her baby, Jesus. I asked the tour guide why it was the there, given it was a secular school. She replied, “it’s the iconic image of mother and child.” I politely responded that as a Jew, and a liberal progressive working mother, I was uncomfortable that iconography. She responded, “Oh we have lots of Jews here. We even just made latkes for Passover!” If you’re a Jew, you get the problem. It felt cultish and weird and I drove away wondering why anyone believed it was a progressive education. Thank you for validating my experience.
